In the quiet mountain village of Danyat, in Union Council Harran of District Kollai Pallas Kohistan, the floods of 2024 brought unimaginable loss. Among those affected was Akhiya Khan, a 35 year old farmer supporting a large joint family of twenty. Their simple mud house could not withstand the rushing water. One of his children was injured, and another tragically lost their life. The family was left with nothing but determination to start over.

Before the disaster, in August 2023, the PMS Building Resilient Kohistan Project team (funded by Humedica International) had helped the people of Danyat form a Village Development Committee (VDC), twenty community members led by local residents wanted to find local solutions to their problems. Through open meetings, they agreed that building a protection wall should come first, as repeated floods had long threatened their homes, school, and farmland.

With the technical and financial support of BRKP team, the wall was finally built, it became more than a structure of stones and cement. For families like Akhiya’s, it became a symbol of safety. It now shields 15 homes, protects the government primary school, and saves nearby orchards and farmland from being washed away. It even keeps the village road intact, making it easier for children to attend school and farmers to move their produce. “Without this wall,” Akhiya said quietly, “many of us might have left our village. Now we can stay and live without fear.”

The people of Danyat are grateful for the support that helped them recover, yet they know more work lies ahead. They hope to see their village with clean drinking water, safe walkways, good health services, and opportunities for their children to learn and earn. With their unity, and with the continued partnership of organizations such as Humedica International, the community believes it can build a safer and stronger future turning a story of loss into one of resilience and hope.
